Update 7:49pm: It's over. Samsung has released the following statement this evening:

We are working with relevant regulatory bodies to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Milky way Note seven. Considering consumers' safety remains our top priority, Samsung will enquire all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Milky way Notation vii while the investigation is taking identify.

We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory government to take all necessary steps to resolve the state of affairs. Consumers with either an original Galaxy Notation 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should ability down and cease using the device and accept advantage of the remedies available.

At least five replacement phones accept now exploded or otherwise burned up, and it appears Samsung is implicitly confirming those reports with this statement. Either manner, the risk is just too loftier.

Update 10:51am: Samsung told Android Central "We are temporarily adjusting the Milky way Note7 production schedule in lodge to take further steps to ensure quality and safety matters." — not quite a confirmation, only close.

The political mural may be the proverbial dumpster fire right at present, but this weekend also brought terrible news for Samsung: Replacement Galaxy Note 7s still have a propensity to grab fire and are extremely dangerous.

Samsung has temporarily halted production of the Galaxy Annotation vii, co-ordinate to Korea's Yonhap News Bureau, and US carriers have already stopped selling the replacement Milky way Note 7s. While the [CPSC] investigation is underway, Verizon is suspending the exchange of replacement Note 7 smartphones," a spokeswoman told our sister site PCMag in an emailed argument. "Any Verizon customer concerned nearly the safe of their replacement Note seven can take it back to the original point of purchase to exchange it for another smartphone. Verizon online customers may too exchange their replacement Annotation 7 smartphones at Verizon stores."

T-Mobile has also suspended sales of the Galaxy Note seven: "While Samsung investigates multiple reports of issues, T-Mobile is temporarily suspending all sales of the new Annotation vii and exchanges for replacement Notation seven devices. Customers can still bring their recalled Annotation vii or the new replacement Annotation 7, along with accessories they purchased from T-Mobile, to a T-Mobile store for a full refund and choose from any device in T-Mobile's inventory. We'll waive whatever restocking charges, and customers who purchased during pre-lodge can keep the gratuitous Netflix subscription and Gear Fit or SD card they received."

The trouble started in August, when the showtime instance of a Galaxy Note 7 overheating first made the news. Since then, we've heard many reports of Galaxy Note 7s overheating, catching fire, and fifty-fifty exploding. At the time, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urged "all consumers who own a Samsung Galaxy Notation 7 to ability them down and stop charging or using the device." Samsung initially moved to recall over ii million phones. Shortly thereafter, the visitor began aircraft hundreds of thousands of replacement versions that supposedly didn't have the manufacturing defect in its bombardment that led to the overheating issues.

But nosotros've now heard of at least v separate incidents where replacement models accept as well overheated and caught fire. Finer, the Galaxy Notation 7 is now dead every bit a phone model. Off the top of my head, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, the Motorola Z Forcefulness, and the HTC 10 are three solid replacements. For less money, either the OnePlus three or a closeout auction on the Nexus 6P would as well be fantabulous choices. The impressive Google Pixel Forty simply launched, but won't ship for v-6 weeks at the fourth dimension of this writing and you need a new phone now.
